A lifelong love for the Croatian language

Mateja has always known she would be a teacher. Growing up in Slavonski Brod, Croatia, she was surrounded by books, discussions about language, and a deep appreciation for Croatian literature. Her passion led her to earn a master’s degree in Croatian language and literature, and today, she dedicates herself to teaching students worldwide.

“If I teach as many
people as possible
to speak Croatian,
it’s going to keep
Croatian exist.”

But for Mateja, teaching isn’t just about grammar and vocabulary – it’s about preserving Croatian culture. She believes that language carries traditions, values, and identity. This belief drives her every lesson, whether she’s guiding beginners through their first Croatian sentences or refining advanced learners’ skills.

From classrooms to cultural experiences

Outside of her online lessons, Mateja is deeply engaged in her local cultural scene. Slavonski Brod has a vibrant calendar of events, from wine festivals to book promotions and even motorcycle rallies that draw visitors from across Europe. As an active member of her town’s library, she participates in book clubs and literary discussions, always looking for ways to bring real-world cultural elements into her teaching.

Her lessons often extend beyond textbooks. By discussing local festivals, historical landmarks, and everyday customs, she ensures her students experience the language in a way that feels personal and immersive.

Structure, discipline, and a touch of creativity

Mateja’s teaching style is rooted in structure and discipline, a reflection of her years working in Croatian schools. Every lesson is meticulously planned, balancing serious learning with relaxed discussions where students can practice in a natural way.

“One of my greatest achievements was when a student asked to stop speaking English entirely. At first, I thought it would be a disaster, but within months, she was sending me emails in Croatian!”

Her goal is to help students feel confident, no matter their level. She tailors lessons based on individual needs – whether someone is learning Croatian for work, to connect with family, or simply out of love for the language. In group classes, she fosters an environment where students support one another, making the learning process collaborative and enjoyable.

A mission to preserve Croatian for future generations

Mateja sees her work as more than just teaching – it’s a mission to keep the Croatian language alive. A study once suggested that Croatian could be at risk of disappearing in the next 50 years, a thought that motivates her daily.

Through her lessons, she hopes to inspire not just fluency but a lifelong appreciation for the language and culture. For her, every new Croatian speaker is a step toward preserving something invaluable.

Inviting the world to experience Croatia

Mateja’s message to learners is simple: Croatian is not just a language to study – it’s a way to connect with a rich and vibrant culture. Whether through music, literature, or local festivals, she encourages students to embrace the language in their daily lives.

“Language is not just about words – it’s about traditions and everything that defines Croatia.”
Teacher Mateja

For her, the greatest reward is seeing students grow in confidence, sending their first message in Croatian, holding their first conversation, or even visiting Croatia and feeling at home. Through her passion and dedication, she is not just teaching a language – she’s keeping a culture alive.
