Nadja and Ingo: a global journey leads to Croatia

They say every adventure begins with a spark of curiosity, and for Nadja and Ingo, that spark ignited in Germany. Having grown up in the Ruhr area, they forged their bond early on – studying, working, and ultimately travelling the world together. From bustling Boston to the plains of Texas, they saw nearly every corner of the United States during their time abroad.

“We’ve visited almost every US state – traveling is a big part of our story.”

After more than a decade in the States, Nadja and Ingo felt the pull back to Europe. They chose Croatia – familiar from past visits – and quickly settled on the scenic island of Brač. Little did they know just how much this move would test their adaptability and spark a new love for the local way of life.

From Germany to island life

Life on Brač brings a refreshing pace that Nadja and Ingo find both relaxing and challenging. Although the ferry rides to the mainland and the quest to find certain supplies can test their patience, they’re learning to appreciate the slower rhythm of island living.

They’ve also discovered that living on an island makes each interaction special. Whether picking up fresh produce at a local market or chatting with neighbours on the street, they’re forging connections that turn simple errands into memorable moments.

Embracing new cultures on the road

Nadja and Ingo’s extensive travels have shaped their approach to life in Croatia. From Asia to Ireland, each country taught them different ways of approaching everyday situations. In the United States, they marveled at how people focused on positive solutions rather than dwelling on problems, while in Japan they observed a deep respect for harmony and tradition.

Those lessons prepared them well for integrating into Croatia’s laid-back culture. They’ve learned to adapt quickly, remain open to new perspectives, and appreciate the unique charm of every place they call home – even if it means navigating unexpected dialects on a small Dalmatian island.

“Language is for communication – that’s the reason why we invented languages in the first place.”

The couple credits their positive experiences to staying humble and curious. Every time they step into a new setting – whether it’s a bustling city in the US or a quiet coastal village in Dalmatia – they focus on how to connect with people and learn from them.

Navigating Croatian grammar

Despite having learned several languages before, Nadja and Ingo still find Croatian a formidable challenge. Seven grammatical cases, unfamiliar vocabulary, and a variety of local dialects can be overwhelming. Yet they persist, because true communication – more than flawless grammar – is their ultimate goal.

They recall moments of triumph, like successfully ordering bread at a local bakery, entirely in Croatian. Each mini-victory makes the language feel more accessible, encouraging them to keep speaking, even when mistakes slip in.

Life on Brač: daily joys and challenges

Embracing the beautiful island of Brač means juggling renovation projects, tending to an olive orchard with over a hundred trees, and adjusting to the ebb and flow of life by the sea. Though it can be a bit isolating at times, they’re consistently amazed by the warmth of local residents, who always have advice or a helping hand.

Beyond the practicalities of island life, they’ve discovered the joy of building friendships through shared experiences. Whether it’s biking around the coast or chatting with neighbours about the best spot for fresh fish, these interactions add depth to their new chapter in Croatia.

“We jumped right in and became olive oil producers on Brač – our orchard has 108 trees!”

Looking ahead, Nadja and Ingo feel confident that with every Croatian phrase they master and every neighbor they greet, they grow more rooted in this island community. Each day brings fresh lessons – both linguistic and personal – deepening their connection to the place they now call home.
