Discovering the need to speak Ukrainian
Patrick, a 47-year-old cultural consultant from Berlin, spent a full decade working on projects in Ukraine, relying solely on English. His background in cultural management saw him coordinating training sessions and forging partnerships, yet something felt missing without the local language.

“I realised I’d spent a decade in Ukraine without speaking Ukrainian properly.”
This realisation sparked a new commitment. Patrick decided it was time to learn the language he had grown to love through cultural exchanges, personal friendships, and countless professional collaborations across Ukraine.
From cultural management to language learning
As a consultant, Patrick works alongside artists, local officials, and culture-focused NGOs. Whether in Kyiv, Odessa, or smaller regional centres, these relationships thrived on trust, but he felt they could deepen further if he spoke their native tongue.
Early lessons quickly revealed the challenges of Cyrillic script and complex Ukrainian grammar. Still, daily practice – supported by a personal tutor – helped him internalise the fundamentals. He also embraced digital tools, sending short emails in Ukrainian to colleagues and connecting language studies to real-world use.
The power of a single public moment
Progress came in steady increments, but Patrick’s dedication truly paid off during a major workshop in Kyiv. He decided to welcome participants in Ukrainian – a bold step that captured the room’s attention and underlined the importance of local language in cultural collaboration.
“A key moment was when I gave opening remarks in Ukrainian for the first time, which profoundly moved everyone – and reminded me why I set out to learn this language.”

Though partly rehearsed, his speech instantly resonated with those accustomed to hearing him speak English. The positive impact confirmed his belief that language stands at the heart of genuine connection and cultural respect.
Family life and hobbies beyond language
When he’s not coordinating cultural initiatives or tackling new Ukrainian vocabulary, Patrick spends time with his 15-year-old son – a dedicated basketball player – and pursues his own weekly basketball games. He also frequents Berlin’s bustling art scene, reflecting his lifelong commitment to creativity and learning.
Patrick has visited an array of countries – including the US, Uzbekistan, and Chile – through professional engagements. Yet Eastern Europe holds a special place in his heart, thanks to the welcoming communities and dynamic cultural transformations he has witnessed across Ukraine.

Looking forward with renewed determination
Even with a packed schedule, Patrick remains devoted to mastering Ukrainian. He sees language learning as more than an academic task – it’s a pathway to forging deeper friendships and offering respect to those who continue to inspire him with their resilience.
“Learning Ukrainian has expanded my worldview and passion for cultural connection.”
Patrick’s journey proves it’s never too late to embrace a new language – especially when driven by curiosity and a sense of shared purpose. In every email, workshop greeting, and personal conversation, he continues to build stronger bridges between cultures.
