A new path inspired by love
Birgit, 58, hails from Ludwigsburg in southern Germany. Married to a Greek husband, she always felt the pull of Greek language and culture. Although her two sons grew up speaking only German at home, Birgit’s dream was to connect more deeply with her husband’s roots and prepare for spending extended periods in Greece.
“I always look forward to my course – having fun is the key to learning.”
She found her motivation in everyday family life. The desire to communicate freely with relatives and locals spurred her to take on Greek lessons in earnest.
Finding joy in structured lessons
Before discovering “Let’s Learn Croatian” – which also hosts Greek classes – Birgit had tried group sessions at her local Volkshochschule. While group learning offered some advantages, she felt the diverse mix of levels and paces left her wanting more individual focus.
Then she met her current teacher, Markella, and noticed an immediate difference. Online classes provided flexibility, and targeted feedback helped her grasp grammar concepts faster. The methodical yet relaxed approach suited her style and gave her the consistent progress she had been missing.
Breakthrough moments in everyday life
Early on, Birgit felt a surge of pride each time she understood a new grammar rule or dared to speak in spontaneous conversations. The sense of achievement was more than just academic – it was confidence in action.
“My biggest breakthrough was definitely when I reserved a table by phone in Greek. I suddenly realised I’d become more confident and it felt fantastic.”
These real-life applications keep her motivated, proving that language learning is as much about courage as it is about studying.
Life beyond language: hobbies and wanderlust
Birgit’s life isn’t all about verbs and vocabulary. She loves exploring nature, going for long walks, and cycling whenever she can. Years ago, she even spent time riding a motorcycle – though she draws the line at more extreme sports like bungee jumping.
Another passion is Greek music. With a dedicated radio station playing at home, she immerses herself in the rhythms and songs of her husband’s culture. Alongside the music, she delights in trying out Greek recipes and has even learnt a few Greek dance steps.

Words of encouragement for fellow learners
Having studied off and on for years, Birgit now confidently recommends a balanced approach: do your homework, practise consistently, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. She believes that, with enough dedication, anyone can unlock the joys of a new language.
“Don’t be too tense – just go for it and talk a lot.”

From her first hesitant attempts to her bold moments of success, Birgit’s journey shows that curiosity, consistency, and a bit of laughter can make all the difference. Whether you’re learning for travel, family, or pure passion, her story is a warm reminder that every new word opens up a world of connection.
