Embracing the Greek language from Thessaloniki

Nikos, a 33-year-old Greek teacher based in Thessaloniki, discovered his calling through a deep-rooted love for the Greek language. Surrounded by medieval landmarks and centuries-old traditions, he recognised early on that Greek is more than just grammar – it’s a living tapestry of history and culture.

“The best thing is seeing my students speak Greek and learn my native language.”

Being raised in a city where ancient and medieval influences intertwine, Nikos felt inspired to share this linguistic heritage with others. Over time, he has come to view teaching as his way of passing on a piece of Greece’s enduring cultural legacy.

Learning to teach and inspire

Nikos studied Greek literature, theology, and linguistics to develop a well-rounded perspective on the language. His studies led him to train as a Greek teacher, where he refined his approach to both classical and modern Greek. This academic background gave him a special appreciation for how the language has evolved over 4,000 years.

Today, he balances historical insights with practical teaching methods. Instead of limiting lessons to vocabulary lists and grammar drills, Nikos encourages students to explore Greek culture through folklore, traditional ballads, and even philosophical dialogues by Plato. He believes it’s this rich context that truly brings the language to life.

Tailoring lessons for every student

As a teacher, Nikos focuses on real-world usage. He creates scenarios – like ordering fresh fish at a bustling Greek market – to help learners practice conversations in a fun, immersive way. These activities make the language more accessible, especially for beginners who may find its long history intimidating at first.

He also customises each lesson to a student’s pace and goals. Some learners crave in-depth grammar explanations, while others prefer conversational practice. For Nikos, teaching is about adapting: no two students are alike, and their lessons shouldn’t be either.

“I see the lesson not as something fixed but as a flexible experience that adapts to each student’s needs.”

One of his favourite experiences was recreating an open-air market scene online. He played the role of a fishmonger, while students practised buying produce in Greek. Moments like these, he says, bring the language out of textbooks and into real life.

Discovering the world and Greece’s hidden gems

Outside of teaching, Nikos loves to travel. He’s explored the Balkans, Turkey, and many corners of Greece itself. One of his most cherished spots is Delphi, an ancient sanctuary he describes as mysterious and deeply spiritual. Sharing travel tips allows him to connect language lessons with broader cultural experiences.

He often suggests that students immerse themselves in Greek culture through music, regional dishes, and local legends. By blending language study with cultural insights, he aims to foster a more holistic understanding of Greece, both past and present.

From classic cuisine to contemporary sounds

When he’s not in the virtual classroom, Nikos can often be found in the kitchen experimenting with traditional recipes. One of his favourites is ‘Juwezi’, a hearty dish of meat and pasta baked in the oven. Sharing these culinary delights with students is another way he encourages them to taste the richness of Greek culture.

“I can’t pick just one favourite Greek song; there are so many!”
Teacher Nikos

Nikos firmly believes that language is best learned when students feel inspired. Music, food, and storytelling are all part of the journey. By weaving these into his lessons, he provides a richer, more memorable experience, all while preserving the spirit of Greek tradition.

His journey reflects a commitment to sharing Greece’s linguistic heritage with the world. Whether he’s discussing Plato or hosting virtual market scenes, Nikos aims to bridge ancient tradition and modern living for every learner he meets.
