Embracing a family’s language heritage
Christian, 40, grew up in the small southern German town of Tübingen and has been living in Stuttgart for the last eight years. He studied industrial engineering in Munich and now works in technical sales, a role that frequently takes him on business trips.

“My wife is from Greece, our son grows up bilingual – now I also want to communicate in Greek.”
He first encountered Greek through his wife, who is originally from Thessaloniki. They initially communicated in English, but she soon picked up German, making it their everyday family language. Now, their four-year-old son is growing up bilingual, and Christian is determined to join in by learning Greek himself.
Taking on new grammar and daily challenges
Christian soon discovered that Greek differs greatly from languages he already knew. Mastering the unfamiliar alphabet was the first step, but it was the rapid speech and intricate grammar that truly challenged him. Over the years, he joined various courses and study routines, though frequent breaks often eroded his progress.
This time, he’s committed to maintaining a steady pace. Witnessing how easily his son switches between German and Greek motivates Christian to push forward, aiming to overcome language hurdles and hold meaningful conversations with his extended Greek family.
Discovering little triumphs at home
The real breakthrough came when Christian realised he already grasped everyday phrases his wife used with their son. Simple calls, bedtime reminders, and playful banter started sounding familiar. Each recognised word was a reminder of how much he’d absorbed just by being around the language.
Determined to capitalise on this foundation, Christian now pursues one-to-one lessons that fit around his busy schedule. This flexible approach lets him zoom in on any difficulties he encounters, gradually easing him into fluent interaction.
“At first I struggled with even the basics, but hearing Greek at home every day made me realize I already recognized common words and phrases.”
Traditions, travels and personal passions
Christian regularly visits Thessaloniki and Halkidiki with his family, relishing the sun, sea, and chance to practise Greek with his in-laws. While work constraints mean he can’t stay all summer, those weeks abroad offer invaluable cultural immersion.
Outside language learning, he enjoys sports, maintains a 160-litre aquarium, and travels for business, including recent trips to Japan. Even so, it’s the simpler pleasures – like bonding with his son over fish-feeding sessions or attending traditional Greek celebrations in Stuttgart – that enrich his multilingual world.

Looking ahead with determination
With growing confidence in Greek, Christian feels more connected to his wife’s culture and is proud to see his son flourishing in a bilingual environment. He aims to keep practising consistently, recognising how crucial momentum is for language proficiency.
From everyday chats with relatives in Greece to local gatherings at the Greek Orthodox church in Stuttgart, Christian’s steady progress is proof that it’s never too late to embrace a new language. He encourages anyone starting out to set clear goals and celebrate every small step forward.
“Regular practice is key – never pause for too long!”

Christian’s journey highlights the power of persistence and personal motivation. As he continues polishing his Greek, he not only strengthens family ties but also nurtures a deeper cultural understanding – one that he hopes to pass on to his son.
